Autumn Autoest – The Peth 2016

By Barry Lindsay

For the October Autotest we managed to get the use of the Peth wood yard for the day. The venue had been used on the Blue Streak with favourable reports and turned out to be another great autotest. Land owners took up the offer of the SMC club car so became a close contest between those two also. With a surface of smooth concrete polished withwagons  turning  on it along with a layer of gritty dust what more could we ask for!

Test got under way with some very close times over the Targa layout, Andrew Graham & Nigel Harkness were quickest with 51sec closely followed by Barry Lindsay, Martin Davis, John Holliday, Jamie Stuart & Richard Clark all on 52sec.

Test 2 was a repeat and now with a clean line Barry got 45sec, Nigel 49sec, Andrew G, Martin Davis and landowner Alan Faulder quickly adapting to the club car to all get 50sec. Another newcomer William Cheesbrough picked up a wrong test.

Test 3, basically the other way round but seamed more complicated. Barry got 53sec, Andrew, Nigel, John H all got 58sec.

Test 4, the repeat. Kenton Pattison debuting his #saxobeast finally got a clean run having hit cones on the previous tests. Fastest with 52sec saw the fightback begin. Barry getting 53sec, Andrew on 56sec then Helen Harkness & Nigel on 57sec.

Test 5 Kenton was quickest with 51sec, Barry on 54sec, Andrew on 56 then Helen on 57sec.

Test 6 Kenton got 49sec, Barry 51sec, Andrew 56sec and again Helen on 57sec.

Test 7 was getting more complicated. Kenton got 1m08, William Cheesbrough got 1m13, Richard C & Andrew  got  1m14  then  Landowners Alan and Andy Thomson both got 1m15. There were wrong tests for Barry (Who’s navigator nephew Graham still argue’s they were right!), Martin, John Barber, and John Ross also got wrong tests.

Test 8 but now everyone had studied the diagram abit more. Andrew & Nigel both getting 1m14, Martin on 1m15, John H on 1m16. Richard C picked up a wrong test on this run.

Test 9 Kenton & Barry were both in fight back mode getting 1m29, Richard got 1m33, John R, Andrew & John H on 1m35. While Helen picked up a wrong test, her first for a very long time, (blame the navigator all drivers do!)

Test 10 Barry got 1m 27, Kenton on 1m29, Richard on 1m30 Andrew 1m32, John H 1m33. Alan, Nigel & Helen got wrong tests

Test 11 Barry got 1m09, John H got 1m11, Nigel got 1m12 then Kenton and Andy T on 1m13.

Final test Kenton got 1m09, Helen, Nigel, John H got 1m10 then Barry on 1m11.

Autotest Report – Summer Tests – June 2016

By Barry Lindsay

The Summer grass Autotest saw 12 drivers battle it out over 10 tests, it had been planned to run 12 but the weather turned so bad there was no fun for everyone standing around. For the first time we had a BBQ after  6 tests to try and attract non competitors along also.

The field was dry for the majority of the tests. Test 1 Nigel Harkness & Barry Lindsay equaled on 1m27, Andrew Graham on 1m28 then Helen on  1m30.  For  the  re-‐run  Nigel  was  quickest  on  1m24,  John  Ross  got 1m26 then Barry on 1m27 again the Geoffrey Harkness on 1m28 in roadcar class Fiesta.

A quick move of cones and test 3 was ready. Neil Thomlinson was quickest with 1m26 but was suffering from a heavy night out the night before! Nigel got 1m 28, close behind was Helen on 1m29 then Barry on 1m30. Geoffrey Harkness got a wrong test. Continue reading

Spring Autotest – May 2016

By Barry Lindsay

First Autotest of 2016 was at Longpark on grass. Nine competitors reved up and ready to get the season off to flying start.

With 12 tests ahead Kenton Pattison led the field away as current champion but pressure got him as far as the third cone when he spun on the slippy grass and had to do a three point turn to recover. The early runners were struggling for grip but some massive slides were being had and almost as big a smiles on faces – although it wasn’t quick.

First test Helen Harkness was fastest with 1m25 just ahead of Jon Fowler on 1m26 the John Barber on 1m28.

On the repeat as Test2 John Ross got 1m22 while John B, Martin Davies & Barry Lindsay got 1m23. Continue reading

New Years Eve Autotest 2015

New years eve can only mean one thing, Pirelli Autotest. This year saw an almost full entry, 19 drivers in a very varied selection of cars from MG Midget & Escort Mk1 to a BMW 5 series.

With 10 tests planned and a cracking entry, our marshals Michael Lindsay & Ian Robinson would be kept busy and only time for a quick brew while tests were changed round and walked.

First tests was the out going years route the 15. Jack Palmer from West Cumbria was soon showing the regulars that the Ka would be the car to beat with a 53sec. Barry Lindsay & John Ross were as close as you can get though on 54sec Then Andrew Graham on 55. Wrong tests for Joe Herring, James McWhir, James Boothroyd and John Barber.

Chris Hunter

Test 2 was a re-run. Jack was again quickest with 51sec ahead of Barry on 52sec then Kenton Pattison on 53 despite fighting back from hitting two cones on the previous test. Andrew Graham next on 54sec ahead of the Stephen Dixon now with a LSD in the Corsa.

Eight competitors turned up on a Sunny Sunday afternoon for an action packed 12 tests. The test was using a grass field which had been silage a few days earlier so was it excellent condition.

Helen got 1m08 and was leading the event tactically mixing precision and speed (Yep, that was exactly what I was doing…errrr…!! – Helen).
