Spring Autotest – Longtown Auction – 9th of March 2014

By Barry Lindsay

The 2014 Autotest championship blasted off with plenty burning rubber at the first event at Longtown Auction Mart. 16 competitors lined up with 12 tests planned over the car park and wagon parking area with a mixture of good tarmac and hard unsurfaced areas. The first test was a good one to warm up the handbrakes after the winter rebuilds! I would run first on almost all the tests this first one on the loose would mean I was leaving marks for others to follow, but was there more grip? Barry Lindsay 1m 08, John Ross & Kenton Pattison 1m 16, Stephen Dixon 1m 18. On the re-run Now with it being looser it was definatly slower. Barry 1m 16, Stephen, Nigel Harkness on 1m 17 then Kenton 1m 18.

Now onto the tar test, Stephen was fastest showing how to flick the Corsa round the cones with precision, 52sec, Geoffrey Harkness made it a Corsa 1-2 with 55sec, Kenton got 56 ahead of the Micra of George Edminson on 57sec. Myself well I hit a cone…

On the re-run Stephen was again quickest with 53sec, Barry 54sec, Geoffrey 55sec, Kenton 56sec.

Test 5 was a more spread out test using most of the area of the first test added together. Barry 49 sec, Andrew Graham & Neil Thomlinson ( Hand brake wasn’t working before and this test didn’t need it) 52sec, John, Stephen & Nigel all on 53sec. On the re-run Barry got 49, Stephen, Andrew & Neil got 52sec

Test 7 was an extra bit added to the previous test, Barry 1m 12sec, Stephen & Neil 1m 16sec, John & Kenton 1m 19sec

On the re-run Barry 1m 13sec, Stephen & John 1m 17sec, Andrew, Geoffrey & Jon Stynes getting the hang of the C2 on the loose all on 1m 19sec.

Back to a shorter tighter test for 9 all on the tarmac part. Tighter test suited the C1 of John along with Geoffrey & Barry 48sec, Neil, Kenton, Andrew & Jon all on 49. On the re-run Barry 45sec, Neil 47sec, George & John on 48sec.

Final two tests weren’t run as the now routine Super special as there was too much surface variation to get true equal tests. Barry 46sec, Kenton 47sec, Andrew 49sec, Jon & Neil on 50. The re-run Barry 46sec, Stephen 47sec, Nigel, John & Andrew 49sec.

Thanks to Ian Robinson & Michael Lindsay for marshalling and Longtown Auction Mart for the use of there car-park.

Pirelli Autotest (28th of July 2013)

By Barry Lindsay

A wet Sunday morning at the end of July saw the latest Spadeadam Autotest round. Inviting other local club members to join our strong entry from our club it promised to be an action packed day. In reality it turned out to be the lowest entry of the year and the committee will need to look at why for next year.

Twelve tests were planned running two tests at a time but with some cars left abandoned in the car park on the area we planned to use, space was limited. The first two test were set up together but after that due to the low entry numbers, single bigger tests were run over a larger area which made more smiley faces!!

Test one and it was pouring down, the visitors showed the Spadeadam members how it should be done! Warren Gillespie blitzed round the tight course with 53 seconds, 16 seconds ahead of Stephen Dixon. Chasing down the visitors were Jon Stynes & Nigel Harkness who both got 1m 18.

Peter Johnson

Test three, which was running at the same time, saw the visitors demo there nimbleness around the tight layout of cones. Warren quickest on 56 sec then Stephen on 1m03, Jon was best SMC member with 1m10 then John Ross on 1m18. Continue reading

The Long Grass Autotest! (9th of June 2013)

The June Autotest was held at Longpark in a different field, the field had been unused since finishing combining last autumn. The surprise on faces as people saw the field. The wild growing grass in places would be almost knee height.

Two test sites were set out and with a good entry of 16 competitors and we were pleased to see new faces.

Test 1 Geoffrey was quickest with 1m00, Barry on 1m03, Nigel & newcomer Alec Broughton on 1m04 then Helen, George & newcomer Paul Lowry on 1m05. Richard Clark & Robert Johnstone both got wrong tests. Continue reading

Spring Autotest – 10th of March 2013

By Barry Lindsay

Longtown Spring Auction Autotest wasn’t very spring like, with flurries of snow in air and an arctic wind blowing over the car park.

Two test sites were set up and tarmac area and a loose area. Michael Lindsay & Caroline Lodge marshalled Tests 1 & 2 on the tarmac area while Ian Robinson marshalled the loose area tests 3 & 4.  15 Drivers lined up for the 10 tests that lay ahead. Barry lead the event off but was to be on a back foot from the off by clipping a cone. Newcomer Jon Stynes was quickest with 1m01 ahead of John on 1m06 then another newcomer Danny Little with 1m07.

On the re-run Barry fought back with 58sec ahead of Andrew with 59sec then Nigel on 1m08.

On the gravel test Danny showed his speed getting 1m05 in his lowered Saxo. Jon got 1m09 with the mini followed by Andrew, Nigel & George on 1m10. Wrong routes for John, Eric & Mike dropped them back.

Danny Little

On the re-run Jon & Barry tied at the top with 1m07 ahead John & Neil V with 1m09. This test also saw the retirement of Neil T & Kenton who had a brake pipe burst.

New Years Eve Autotest 2012

By Barry Lindsay

Eleven drivers entered the final event of 2012. Ten tarmac testes lay ahead and after overnight rain thankfully the weather was mostly dry but the car park was slippery. The first test, manned by Ian Robinson, John Ross debuted his new car and was quickly setting the pace with 51sec, Barry Lindsay, Geoffrey Harkness & Neil Thomlinson all equalled on 53sec.

For the re-run Barry upped his pace stopping the clock on 48sec, Neil T on 50sec then Andrew Graham a newcomer to SMC autotests getting 52sec.

Andrew Graham

Test three manned by Michael Lindsay was a longer test with a tight slalom that some struggled on. Barry got 1m 04 ahead of John in the C1 on 1m13 the Neil T on 1m30. Continue reading

Autotest (14th of October 2012)

By Barry Lindsay

Following a disappointingly wet summer which had seen two grass autotests cancelled an extra event was added at Longtown Auction. But despite the minimum entries not being met the event went ahead.

Two fresh cars were being débuted at this event. Neil Thomlinson had stripped out his sisters old fiesta and had also talked his dad Joe into having a go at driving. Barry Lindsay had put the 1.4 running gear back into his old rally shell to use for auto testing.

Test 1 John was quickest with 1m16 despite concerns how tight it was for the big car and quite tight test. Neil T was happy with the fiesta on 1m21 then Barry on 1m 29. Geoffrey got a wrong test.

Due to the last two autotests being cancelled due to waterlogged fields- this summer hasn’t been kind to us – the committee are trying to get a hard surface venue for an October date. (details on front page of website)

If anyone knows of any venues for next year please let Barry know now.

Hard standing areas, quarries, silage pits anything considered!!!
