DMack Carlisle Stages 2016

By Mark Talbot

Following the Pirelli there was some panel beating required on the near side rear quarter of the 106. After a trip offshore there was only a few days to get this sorted before the event. We managed to build a new inner arch and knock the side into something near and hoped that would be OK for scruitneering. The more I looked at it the more I was determined it was actually stronger than new albeit a little less flat with a few pop rivets here and there. With the event being local we drove the 106 down the night before where it sailed through scruitneering with no issues. We left home rally morning and as our house was closer to the stages than the service area and left the trailer at home and just drove down in the car. We got to the first stage in good time but had a long delay before starting. After not driving the car for a few months and feeling a little rusty we weren’t exactly up to speed after the long delay. Despite the first stage being relatively short we were flagged down four times due to other cars being off the road which also cost us a lot of time. The second stage was much longer and allowed us to get into a better rhythm. That was until the brake servo pipe came off in the inlet manifold and we lost the servo assisted brakes. We managed to keep up the pace but had to brake earlier and with much more pressure to get the car slowed down but even with the throttle closed, air was rushing into the intake making the engine rev. Half way through the stage we had pretty much caught the car in front but in the excitement under-‐steered round a 90 left and went into the ditch where the car rolled onto its roof! We spent a minute upside down whilst the marshals and spectators got us the right way up again. The car started straight away and we were thankfully on our way again, all without the car behind catching up. Continue reading

Autotest Report – Summer Tests – June 2016

By Barry Lindsay

The Summer grass Autotest saw 12 drivers battle it out over 10 tests, it had been planned to run 12 but the weather turned so bad there was no fun for everyone standing around. For the first time we had a BBQ after  6 tests to try and attract non competitors along also.

The field was dry for the majority of the tests. Test 1 Nigel Harkness & Barry Lindsay equaled on 1m27, Andrew Graham on 1m28 then Helen on  1m30.  For  the  re-‐run  Nigel  was  quickest  on  1m24,  John  Ross  got 1m26 then Barry on 1m27 again the Geoffrey Harkness on 1m28 in roadcar class Fiesta.

A quick move of cones and test 3 was ready. Neil Thomlinson was quickest with 1m26 but was suffering from a heavy night out the night before! Nigel got 1m 28, close behind was Helen on 1m29 then Barry on 1m30. Geoffrey Harkness got a wrong test. Continue reading

Spring Autotest – May 2016

By Barry Lindsay

First Autotest of 2016 was at Longpark on grass. Nine competitors reved up and ready to get the season off to flying start.

With 12 tests ahead Kenton Pattison led the field away as current champion but pressure got him as far as the third cone when he spun on the slippy grass and had to do a three point turn to recover. The early runners were struggling for grip but some massive slides were being had and almost as big a smiles on faces – although it wasn’t quick.

First test Helen Harkness was fastest with 1m25 just ahead of Jon Fowler on 1m26 the John Barber on 1m28.

On the repeat as Test2 John Ross got 1m22 while John B, Martin Davies & Barry Lindsay got 1m23. Continue reading

DMack Carlisle Stages 2016

By Barry Lindsay

Our local event saw mixed fortunes for the many Spadeadam members. Peter Taylor & Andrew Roughead had their first outing of the year in the Lilliardsedge / Westlands Focus WRC and despite a big spin on Stage 2 loosing time then finishing the rough stage 4 with two front punctures they brought the Focus home 2nd OA and ‘If Only’ .

Rory Young and Allan Cathers lost a load of time on Stage 2 when they caught a car and had to follow in the clouds of dust for several mile but finished 13th OA 9th in class.

Phil & Caroline Jobson were aiming for good Northern Historic Championship points and Caroline was given strict instructions to make sure they got to the finish. This they did in 33rd OA 3rd in class.

Mark & Amanda Talbot were out in the 1400 106 and were keen to see how they compared in the strong 1400 class. However a roll on Stage 2 dropped them over a minute. Stage 4 used the same corner in the opposite direction and went off there again needing the same spectators to push to get back on the road. They battled on to finish 70th OA 5th in class.

Darren Martin & Martin Steele had their recently acquired Evo 9 out from the JDM Motorsport hire fleet. However a bottom ball joint failed sending them home on SS3. Rob Graham & Helen Harkness suffered a rare wheel failure on a rough section of SS3. Splitting the wheel in two they had to stop and change but couldn’t get the wheel off, eventually a spare was fitted and they got round the rest of the event but were OTL. Barry Lindsay & Caroline Lodge were pushing for the class lead to get good SG Petch ANECC points but in an effort to gain the 4 seconds on a Fiesta R200 the 206 left the road. Stuck in the wet Kershope ditch the 2wd was stuck fast.

Editor’s Thoughts

By Helen Harkness

(You weren’t expecting that one were you? & I warn you, I’m feeling quite emotional)

Hello all,

Way back in September 1978, when “Tyred Topics” was only on edition no.99, and we were still filling 9 pages of A4, the late Bob Harrison wrote of how he ‘accidentally’ came to join Spadeadam MC and the pleasure & friendship it had brought him. He described the club at that time as a “happy and very competitive car club due to the fact that no-one is left on the sidelines”.  Bob was only a relative newcomer when he wrote that. He’d only been a member for 2 years, but reading some of the old “TT’s” you get a sense of why it had made such an impression…. Spadeadam M.C. is, and always has been a club that runs with it’s own new ideas and has it’s own personality!  38 years later, it’s comforting to read that some things don’t change much; 12 car entries were way down one year. Membership numbers had fallen, but then picked up again. The chancellor of the exchequer had just hit motorists hard in their wallets and it looked like it was the end of rallying. Committee members didn’t agree on some item on the agenda and it took a tediously long meeting to decide an outcome! The other thing that I like to think has not changed is the enthusiasm, the humour and the friendship within the club. Because really, without Spadeadam Motor Club and its members I know that my life would be that much poorer; I’d never have done closing car for 3 stages on the RAC; I’d never have won or even driven on a road rally; I’d never have been stood at 2am in a service area in -18 ºC temperatures. I’d never have navigated in a stage rally for Rob or Nigel and so much more. And I’d never have met the really wonderful folk who have helped me on the way. To borrow from Whyte Melville “I freely admit that the best of my fun, I owe it to Spadeadam Motor Club.”

But then again, some things have definitely changed…for example back in 1978 we ran an autocross event at Gilsland show and it was sponsored by “Scottish & Newcastle Breweries” and “Marlboro Cigarettes”!!  Can someone tell me if the winner received cigarettes & alcohol as a prize? And I really, really want to know why we no longer have a fancy-dress disco?! I think that should be on the next AGM agenda.

Photo Hunt- June Club Night Report

A route around Alstonby, Harker, Rockcliffe Blackford, Sandysike Authuret then Kirklinton Smithfield saw crew looking for 30 item which they had photo’s of but something had been erased.

They had to find what??? (And it’s bloomin harder than you think! Ed.)
