Rally Results (August 2017)

Tyneside StagesRory Young & Allan Cathers took runner up spot on the event which they had lead after the first group of stages. The R5 spec machine was down on top speed to the WRC spec cars.

Thank You!

To everyone who helped out during the event by marshalling, I am really grateful to you. Without your help the event could not have happened and I’m of the same opinion as most competitors who expressed their thanks to the marshals and the friendliness of you all.

Pirelli Summer Autotest

By Barry Lindsay

The third round of the Spadeadam Autotest championship was the Summer visit to the Pirelli factory carpark. The SMC contingent of autotesters getting entry priority, but then friends from West Cumbria joined to make a full entry. 10 good surface tests were planned and with the carpark with not a single stray car we managed to set two tests up to run at the same time.

Test 1, marshalled by Michael Lindsay and Graham Petry,  was set off by Barry Lindsay, with the first wrong test also! He was joined in wrong tests by David Garstang, John Ross, and Paul Hettrick. Quickest was Chris Hunter in his MX5 wth 51sec but had also used 2 rear tyres! Stuart Moffat and Andrew Robinson got 54sec then Helen Harkness on 59sec.

For the 2nd run at this test Stuart got 50, Andrew  on 52, Nigel Moffat and Jamie Stuart on 53sec. Wrong tests on this run for Chris Hunter, Paul Hettrick, and John Barber.

A Quizzical Walk

By Helen Harkness

A car club, having a club night without any cars?  Well, yes. That’s because we’re modern and forward thinking, planning ahead for the days when we’ve all had to have electric cars and the battery’s gone flat!

The “quizzical walk” started outside Mr Browns, with Kay Lindsay providing  the question sheet and an RAC rally pen (she seemed to have a great stash of them from somewhere…?), we then headed anti-clockwise around the Moot Hall. Continue reading

Soapbox Derby 2017

By Graham Petry

I’d firstly like to thank the motor club for organizing such a fantastic event and the competitors who took part making the day all the more fun and challenging.
So I was first to go down the course which possibly wasn’t the best idea after last year.. But anyway I got to the finish with a clean run and a decent score of 1m 05sec.
Next to go was Uncle Barry. He ambitiously took the corner with a lot of speed and found himself upside down in the hedge, a quick recovery but set him back a bit of time to record a time of 1m 16.

Helen, Nigel, John Ross, Martyn & Shaun followed shortly afterwards. The leader board after the first run was positive position for me as Martyn sat in first, Helen second, Shaun joint third with myself. John was 5th, Nigel 6th and Uncle Barry 7th.

The Northern Dales Classic Trophy 2017

By Barry Lindsay

The Northern Dales Production Car Autotest held at Eastgate Cement works in Weardale. Hexham and District MC ran 20 tests during the day, with 5 attempts at 4 different test locations. The event ran with 55 cars which kept the marshals busy all day. Helen and myself were starting at 19 which was quite a high seeding. Obviously after the 2nd in class on our first event, word had travelled to the north east for a good seeding.

The first 4 tests were back to back with no spare time between and the plan of steady run round lasted till about cone B on test 1!! However a close encounter with a massive concrete base for an electric pole, caused a large intake of breath from both of the Corsa crew while ‘Colin’ somehow breathed in to stop his side getting bashed…

The ALMC Stages 2017

By Phil Jobson

This is the aftermath of our ‘off’ on SS3 of the ALMC Stages Rally starting from Trim in Co. Meath, Ireland. Three loops of three very fast bumpy stages posed a tough challenge for the disappointingly low number of only 7 crews contesting this BHRC round over the Irish Sea.

Only 20 seconds separated all 7 BHRC crews after the first stage. The second stage went well for us too, despite being on well used Pirelli tyres and the driver coping with a swollen thumb sustained following food poisoning on Friday night. Continue reading

Greystoke Stages 2017

By Barry Lindsay

West Cumbria MC’s Greystoke Stages was run to a new format in 2017 with no split junctions. However before you get that far the event is so popular it’s a race to get an entry. 55 entries plus reserves within 20min of entries being available at 8am on a Sunday morning!
Darren Martin & Martin Steele were seeded at 10 in the Evo9, with Barry Lindsay & Caroline Lodge at 15 in the 206. James Coxon was navigating for Mark Shaw at 25 in the Sunbeam. Rob Graham & Helen Harkness were in the Mk1 Escort at 33 then Jamie Martin & Kyle Gass at 48 in the Subaru.

Summer Drive 2017

By Caroline Lodge

Some time ago I agreed to organise this years Summer Drive. Can’t be that hard I thought, have a drive out, stop for refreshments and drive back. No worries – Hmmmm…
Firstly, to be honest the event slipped my mind! However I was reminded in plenty of time and got on with it. Put my thinking cap on – first idea Elf Kirk View point would be nice – Nope it’s too far. High Force would include a walk, that would be good – Nope they shut the path or turn the falls off at 5pm. Oh heck where can we go?
After a bit of grumbling and staring at the maps, I planned a route. My assistant Dylan and I set off to check it out and take some photos of junctions etc. All went well and the mini road books were all printed and sorted over a week before the date. Continue reading
