A Drive Through a Wood- Part 2!

By Helen Gibbon

The pacenotes arrived about a week before the rally. So I had a little bit of time to sit down with Rob and work out how to get my tongue around this new and unfamiliar language. Watching the DVD was interesting. I did it a few times with the sound on, then tried it with the sound off. Then I tried it at one a half times the speed. I tried it a double speed, but then I thought, I’m not sat in with Petter Solberg yet! Friday came and I was allowed the afternoon off to go down to scrutineering. This was going to be a new experience for me too. I’d never been to M-sport, and I’d never been to scrutineering on any event before. Signing on and going through documentation was a definite eye opener. Add boxes to time cards, remove boxes from time cards, change times allowed… sign here, sign there…. Have a free bag (yes please!). All boxes were ticked which could only mean one thing…. Let the fun begin!

A fairly early start the next morning to get back down to M-Sport. Rob and our service crew were already there unloading the car, so I went to see if there were any changes or notices I needed to read. I was actually feeling quite calm at this point. When we got into the car, ready to head to MC1, the butterflies in my tummy were just about starting to wake up. Continue reading

March 12 Car Report

By Neil Thomlinson

After missing February’s 12 car I was out competing with Barry on the March 12 car organised by Jerry. Looking at the details for it and it was on maps 85, 86 and 90, 3 maps?! Surely a trick where only 2 where used, plotted the start reference of 85/431.5 412 I realised this was right in the corner of map 85 which to the east went onto map 86 and to the south went onto map 90, this event was surely to switch between the 3 maps throughout the night, we were in for a treat!

With the night getting colder and the fog getting thicker, it was setting up to be a challenging night, with 7 crews at the start waiting for first car to be away at 8.01pm. Off we go, the route went from the start layby straight off map 85 on to map 90 to Hutton End where it took a slot right which brought us to the first time control, then a T-junction turn right which took us back up onto map 85.

Mark Galloway & Kyle Gass finished 53rd O/A, 11th in class and Rob Graham & Helen Gibbon took the historic Mk1 to Helen’s first rally award. 59th O/A, 3rd in class & Best prepared car. Not having such a good day, were Darren Martin & Martin Steele who broke a driveshaft at the start of Wythop then lost the rear wheel and retired on the spot. James Coxon was navigating Mark Shaw but they also broke a halfshaft on the Sunbeam in Wythop.

Border CountiesPeter Taylor debuted his new s2000 Fiesta finishing 9th O/A despite a jump start. Darren Martin / Martin Steele finished 29th O/A 17th in class in the Evo. The Malcolm Wilson Rally in a Mk1.. or “A Drive Through A Wood”. (Pt1!)

By Helen Gibbon

It had started out as most things do, as a bit of a joke, or at least that’s what I thought it was. One afternoon back in November, it was suggested that when Rob Graham did his first event in his newly finished Mk1 Escort, that I should navigate for him. I quickly pointed out that even though I had an MSA license, I’d never actually done a rally before. I’d be no use and we’d probably end up in Newcastle with my navigational skills! This was duly noted and promptly ignored.

The next month consisted of Barrie Thomson telling me I should do the rally and stop being a wuss. So I said a very tentative yes. Partly just to stop him going on about it, and partly because I did actually really, really want to do it! I always thought that I’d do my first event sat next to Nigel. So that if I really messed up he’d gently remind me which is my left and right, and tell me not to worry as the wheels can be put back on and those dents can be polished out… I think Nigel was a bit worried about how much it might cost to fix a Mk1 that should have gone right, but the navigator had said left!

January came round and it all went quiet on the rally front, work had gone mad and lots of other stuff was happening, so I half thought it had been forgotten, until Rob came to see about printing off an entry form. I was also told firmly that there was no backing out or there’d be trouble. Rob also told me that we were only “Going for a drive through a wood”. We were going to go and have fun, and see how it felt to be back behind the wheel. There was to be no “do or die” stuff, which after looking at one or two of the fresh air corners, I was very glad to hear!!

February then involved lots of youtube videos during lunch hour. At that stage I wasn’t really all that worried about the navigating bit, it was the timing that was sending me into a cold sweat! I’d never seen a timecard, I didn’t know anything about timing for servicing, or road sections or lateness. 12 cars were as close as I’d ever come, and what worried me most was that I usually ended up OTL on those!

Thankfully Caroline Lodge sent me some info on timing and Jerry Hettrick had passed on some “Dos and Don’ts”. So I started to calm down a bit. It was then time to order some pacenotes!

Malcolm Wilson Rally 2014

By Barry Lindsay

The fourth round of the SG Petch ANECCC championship and the second round that we were contesting. With the new points scoring system based on how well you do against everyone else in your class whether they are registered or not. So with a couple of C2 R2’s and the latest Fiesta R2 200bhp and a puma kit car from the BTRDA along with all the quick locals in the class, I wasn’t hopeful of good points. With the 206 ready to go after Scrutineering where the only problem was an electric fire extinguisher push button failure. But M-Sport came to the rescue with a one off a fiesta.

After a lot of rain on the days leading up to the event I was very surprised to see dust at the start of stage 1 Comb.. First stage went well apart from an all 4 wheels locked up approaching 3 marshals standing on a bank. They disappeared backwards as I bounced off it but minimal time loss.( I wouldn’t care I had marshaled that junction a few years ago!!). I was happy with the time though 1 second behind the Fiesta with 6m 49. Quickest of the SMC members were Darren Martin & Martin Steel in the Evo with 6m 38. Mark Shaw & James Coxon got 6m 56, Jimmy Hall & Caroline Lodge were having there first outing of the new Peugeot 205 RWD, getting 7m 25 then Mark Goodfellow & Kyle Gass on 7m 36 after two spins and having to reverse. Rob Graham & Helen Gibbon were settling them selves into the rebuilt Mk1 getting 7m 56. Crews headed to Wythop the Spadeadam marshaled stage run by Barry Armstrong & Lorraine Beaty. With two runs at the same time and 30 second starts could make it interesting.

Scrabbling uphill for the first half of the stage was OK but also realized all the years I had marshaled the start I hadn’t drove the stage since the last time I did the Malcolm Wilson in 2004. Heading down hill speeds increased when ‘Left 7, fresh air’ at which point I locked the brakes. So option two was just to turn and power it. Going sideways and taking the last post out which held the tape and going under a bush but it worked. A little further caught up with the minute guy limping out on one shaft but we caught him on the fast big dipper so made our way past on the grass as two spectator disappeared into the trees.. Straight back into ss3 this time certain places had more caution but caught another car this time near the finish but with no way of passing lost a few seconds. 4m01 and 3m 56, Over the two stages we had only dropped 2 seconds to the class leader. Darren & Martin’s rally had come to an end when a rear shaft broke on the Evo near the start and limping through only for the rear wheel assembly to come off and retired. Mark & James were also in trouble with a half shaft breaking.

They headed to service to repair and would join back in for the Grizedale stages. Jimmy & Caroline got 4m 14 then 4m 04, Rob & Helen 4m 44 & 4m31 then Mark & Kyle in the JD Motorsport Subaru on 4m48 & 4m18 now with a slipping clutch, but it would be sorted on the way to Greystoke.

Greystoke was the next stage after management service on the A66. Stage was in perfect condition and ran by Eden Valley Mc with Tom Wilcox Stage Commander. A good clean run got us 8m 32, another 4 seconds lost to the Fiesta and now 7 seconds down. James & Caroline got 9m 05, Mark & Kyle got 9m 13, then Rob & Helen with 9m 29.

After service at Penrith truck stop it was down to Grizedale for three stages, first two again at 30 seconds.

Following Stuart Egglestone into the stage for the first run I knew I wasn’t going to catch him! Got 5m 00 which was 7 seconds ahead of the Fiesta R200, making us equal. Mark & James getting 5m 08, Jimmy & Caroline got 5m 17, Mark & Kyle 5m33, then Rob & Helen on 5m 54.

Re-run at 30 seconds We caught a car just before the split getting 7m 34, Now we lead the class by 8 seconds, Jimmy & Caroline got 7m 54, then Mark & James on 7m 57, Mark & Kyle on 8m 22 then Rob & Helen on 8m 30. A short road section to avoid the Ash dieback area we were at Grizedale South. We had a bit of a push in this one and nearing the end the backend was very sideways so thought we picked up a puncture, but hadn’t. 10m 14 was another 10 seconds out of the fiesta. Jimmy & Caroline got 10m 35, Mark & James on 10m 47, then Rob & Helen along with Mark & Kyle both getting 11m 24.

Back to service at Penrith then to the final stage a re-run of Greystoke. The sun was now up and a drying wind meant most of the stage was dry and dusty and

some corners were now featuring black skid marks in the braking zone it was so hard. A big moment on slight left over a crest junction with a rear wheel in the ditch in 4th gear, woke me up! It was then going well until we went into a tight hairpin and the steering went stiff as I was about to handbrake. After going wide I realized the Power steering had gone which was probably the alternator belt also. The fast straight stuff wasn’t a problem but three more hairpins would mean some time loss. 8m 21 only 3 seconds down on the R200..That would do nicely. Only thing was the results team had lost a timecard so we weren’t featuring on any results!! Limping back to Reghed for the MTC and to see the officials to get it sorted. Mark & James had a big push in the Sunbeam getting 8m 34, while Jimmy & Caroline were in trouble loosing all the water the engine temperature had gone through the roof and loosing power. 8m 51 but had to get back to the final MTC.

Mark & Kyle felt they had a good stage and pushed abit harder getting 8m 53, 20 seconds faster than the first run. Rob & Helen got 9m 13.

Thanks to everyone who turned out to marshal, and my service crew Geoffrey Harkness, Joe & Neil Thomlinson.

Spring Autotest – Longtown Auction – 9th of March 2014

By Barry Lindsay

The 2014 Autotest championship blasted off with plenty burning rubber at the first event at Longtown Auction Mart. 16 competitors lined up with 12 tests planned over the car park and wagon parking area with a mixture of good tarmac and hard unsurfaced areas. The first test was a good one to warm up the handbrakes after the winter rebuilds! I would run first on almost all the tests this first one on the loose would mean I was leaving marks for others to follow, but was there more grip? Barry Lindsay 1m 08, John Ross & Kenton Pattison 1m 16, Stephen Dixon 1m 18. On the re-run Now with it being looser it was definatly slower. Barry 1m 16, Stephen, Nigel Harkness on 1m 17 then Kenton 1m 18.

Now onto the tar test, Stephen was fastest showing how to flick the Corsa round the cones with precision, 52sec, Geoffrey Harkness made it a Corsa 1-2 with 55sec, Kenton got 56 ahead of the Micra of George Edminson on 57sec. Myself well I hit a cone…

On the re-run Stephen was again quickest with 53sec, Barry 54sec, Geoffrey 55sec, Kenton 56sec.

Test 5 was a more spread out test using most of the area of the first test added together. Barry 49 sec, Andrew Graham & Neil Thomlinson ( Hand brake wasn’t working before and this test didn’t need it) 52sec, John, Stephen & Nigel all on 53sec. On the re-run Barry got 49, Stephen, Andrew & Neil got 52sec

Test 7 was an extra bit added to the previous test, Barry 1m 12sec, Stephen & Neil 1m 16sec, John & Kenton 1m 19sec

On the re-run Barry 1m 13sec, Stephen & John 1m 17sec, Andrew, Geoffrey & Jon Stynes getting the hang of the C2 on the loose all on 1m 19sec.

Back to a shorter tighter test for 9 all on the tarmac part. Tighter test suited the C1 of John along with Geoffrey & Barry 48sec, Neil, Kenton, Andrew & Jon all on 49. On the re-run Barry 45sec, Neil 47sec, George & John on 48sec.

Final two tests weren’t run as the now routine Super special as there was too much surface variation to get true equal tests. Barry 46sec, Kenton 47sec, Andrew 49sec, Jon & Neil on 50. The re-run Barry 46sec, Stephen 47sec, Nigel, John & Andrew 49sec.

Thanks to Ian Robinson & Michael Lindsay for marshalling and Longtown Auction Mart for the use of there car-park.

Next event – 27th April ( Weather permitting) Long Park Farm, Scaleby. 1pm Start. Let Barry Lindsay know your entering then should it be called off for weather you will be contacted.

What? More ‘Them Were The Days’!

Don’t blame Helen, if you wrote something for the newsletter she wouldn’t have to print my ramblings and you wouldn’t have to skip this page.

The stage plan of the February 1992 B.H.P. Hallburn Stages made me think back to March 1992 when five of us from Spadeadam went through to Workington to compete in the Cumbria MSG Quiz. This was an annual Motorsport quiz competition entered by most of the Cumbrian motor clubs. The honour of the club was resting squarely on the shoulders of Mike & Barry Lindsay, John Ross, Nick Hayes and me. I remember the individual round, you know the one, where all your team-mates get questions that you know the answers to but your question may as well be in a foreign language as you haven’t got a clue what the quizmaster is talking about let alone know answer is. The questions for each team came from a different sealed envelope so even the quizmaster didn’t have a clue what was coming. Anyway it was Nick’s turn and he was asked, ” Who sponsored this years Hallburn Stages”. Nick’s answer of “Me” surprised some but it was correct as he ran B.H.P.   I wish my question had been as easy. Amazingly Spadeadam won the quiz more than once, even without Richard and George’s participation.
