Pendragon Stages (22nd of September 2013)

By Barry Lindsay

The Pendragon is always a popular event with the Spadeadam crews and this year was no change. With the event over subscribed by 25 entries at one point. Peter Taylor & Andrew Roughead started at Car 1 following last years win, again in the Focus which was sporting new Border Caravans Livery. Barry & Michael Lindsay were at 12 in the 106. At 36 Darren Martin & Martin Steele brought their new Evo for a test to get some seat time in the new car. Geoffrey Harkness & Caroline Lodge wheeled out the Corsa following a summer rebuild, they started at 44.

A dry morning at Warcop as crews lined up to start the event, the tarmac was still damp but would dry quick and a warm autumn day followed. Peter & Andrew launched into the 8.5 mile stage but would soon come across ‘a sheep and three birds’ standing on the road looking at him! Sure they would soon move. They got 9m 14 after a steady start. Barry & Michael were taking a different approach, try and take some time from the front wheel drive rivals on the greasy opening stage. The 106 was on the edge of grip in several places but were happy with 9m21, 7 seconds behind the Focus in 6th Overall. David & Fiona were in trouble as they hit a black bale at the split, the damage looked minor but the impact had pushed the radiator back onto the fan, and not wanting to damage the engine called it a day. Stage two was slotted in at 30sec but only a few cars got through before it was cancelled when several cars were off in stage and one was blocking the split junction. Both stages 1 & 2 were now cancelled and crews returned to service and notional times given to those not competed. Continue reading

“Trunk Call”

By Clive Alcock

Helen Gibbon is doing a sterling job as the club magazine’s new editor, but does depend on other people, club members, actually writing a few articles for it from time to time. So she asked me:

What shall I write about?” I said. “Don’t know… “ She replied “up to you. What events you’ve done this year, maybe, but don’t worry…You don’t have to mention the tree!

Well, we’ve done quite a lot, tree or no tree. Wife and I on the SMC Summer Treasure Hunt, for instance. Starting out on a fine evening from under the ancient oak and beeches of Rickerby Park, Carlisle, in a Lancia Fulvia owned for nigh-on 20 years. Once our 2nd family car, baby seats in the back, the Fulvia might be a familiar mount but navigating by committee never our forte. So we didn’t do very well at all and, whizzing round, the clues got harder to find: “You’re barking up the wrong tree…” I’m sure she said once, but at least we found the bar OK, out in the wilds of Smithfield. Countdown Thanks

I’d just like to thank all members who turned out to marshal on the Countdown this year. Top job by you all most of you doing multiple controls so we could cover the 38 time controls, 2 DSO controls & 4 passage controls. There has been a lot of praise for the marshals from the competitors so “Well Done” & hope to see you all next year?

In the mean time the Roger Albert Clark rally have asked the club to run two stages on Sunday 10th November and the Service area on the Saturday Night. If your available for either please get intouch, I’d like your help.

The Solway coast rally saw Darren Martin & Martin Steele take there Subaru Impreza to 15th OA (9th in class) while Mark Goodfellow & Peter Johnson took the TF Rallyesport KA to 31st OA (5th in class). The same weekend saw Peter Taylor finish 4th OA  (2nd in class) in the Focus on the Tyneside Stages, ahead of Barry & Michael Lindsay who were 12th OA (1st in class). Tyneside Stages (11th of August 2013)

By Barry Lindsay

The Tyneside Stages were held on the Otterburn military ranges at the beginning of August. A counting round of the North of England Tarmac & SG Petch ANECCC but also the REIS National Tarmac Championships. 67 crews lined up to start the event on the Sunday morning, two crews from Spadeadam. Peter Taylor started at 6 in the Border Caravans Focus WRC and Barry & Michael Lindsay in the 106 at 23.

Stages were slightly damp in places and the skies threatened to rain at any time, so tyre choice was a lottery.

Three stages before service Barry & Michael had opened up a good class lead and were 2nd front wheel drive, while Peter was mixing it with the WRC’s and Darrians at the front. Knocked a mirror off which was returned by the Spadeadam fan club.

Barry & Michael Lindsay

A repeat of the same three saw times tumble and the top crews beating the bogie time. Barry & Michael were now also mirror less, the big bale chicanes smashing both. Continue reading

Pirelli Autotest (28th of July 2013)

By Barry Lindsay

A wet Sunday morning at the end of July saw the latest Spadeadam Autotest round. Inviting other local club members to join our strong entry from our club it promised to be an action packed day. In reality it turned out to be the lowest entry of the year and the committee will need to look at why for next year.

Twelve tests were planned running two tests at a time but with some cars left abandoned in the car park on the area we planned to use, space was limited. The first two test were set up together but after that due to the low entry numbers, single bigger tests were run over a larger area which made more smiley faces!!

Test one and it was pouring down, the visitors showed the Spadeadam members how it should be done! Warren Gillespie blitzed round the tight course with 53 seconds, 16 seconds ahead of Stephen Dixon. Chasing down the visitors were Jon Stynes & Nigel Harkness who both got 1m 18.

Peter Johnson

Test three, which was running at the same time, saw the visitors demo there nimbleness around the tight layout of cones. Warren quickest on 56 sec then Stephen on 1m03, Jon was best SMC member with 1m10 then John Ross on 1m18. Continue reading
